EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
