The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Yet
The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
