Trumpism's most revealing and defining moments β not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating β came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the American president commenced revealing the public his designs for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad β the existing assessment of casualties from his cuts to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and this week research forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared β genuinely, no other president would have imagined β solo demolishing major areas of the executive mansion to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom conduct transactions with public institutions.
We moved from 'the humble will receive the Earth' to 'the humble will perish to cholera'
As bewildering as it is to witness the president attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us β in older age cohorts almost a majority β who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed over the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into a figure of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this change developed more gradually, over decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and since the quickly increasing segment within America could have minimal awareness regarding him since they are atheists or agnostics or nones. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; however I believe that exist valuable insights of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is emphatically not the account of a mighty king arising; rather, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his doctrine focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the poor β and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and housing. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the other cheek β not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a method to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer him your sweater also.
The evident and straightforward truth that the Savior from scripture requests a form of radical love focused on the poor has consistently rendered Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: appealing to the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness demanding to be restrained. In the fifties it was contained via weakening β Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Best Within Us
Hence I have become heartened to observe the determined opposition against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has been great solace to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We must have to persist with it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities within national heritage.
We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or reject?
The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by relationship to the best in US heritage, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to what makes it special and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it imply feigning the most damaging about the nation and religious tradition never occurred; it represents both meekness and conviction, a combination that genuine US believers should be comfortable with.
